About Brandi/BeePositive
BeePositive was created by Sara Mayer, Jennie Elser, Ashley Bunch and Annette Tanori to raise funds in memory of their friend Brandi Hunt, who lost her fight against Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 2018. She will always be remembered as a beautiful, loving, energetic, caring community leader and friend to so many.
Spring of 2016 was like any other spring, Brandi set a goal to run the Tinker Bell Half Marathon and 10K in one weekend. In May, she and her friend, Sara Mayer, ran the two events totaling 19.3 miles in one weekend. About a month later, Brandi still felt like she had not recovered. She was having some vision issues as well and went to the doctor. She quickly was sent to Scottsdale Shea hospital due to elevated white blood cell count and diagnosed with ALL. Brandi learned her blood type was B+ and her motto of “BeePositive” was born. Her sister was her stem cell donor and at first all seemed to be going well until she began battling graft vs host disease, where her body was fighting the donor cells and as a result, she had several complications. At the age of 47, she had to have her hip replaced and walk with a walker. Brandi was a fighter and passed the expectations of the doctors when it came to recovery. But, in the winter of 2018, she learned her Leukemia was back and she was gearing up for another round of chemo, radiation and another stem cell transplant, when she got pneumonia. Brandi quietly passed away at home, in Phoenix, on May 23, 2018.
Brandi was named the 2018 Greater Phoenix Light The Night Memorial Hero and her legacy continue today through the Man & Woman of the Year Campaign. Each year BeePositive selects a new candidate to fundraise in Brandi’s honor. Since 2018 the team has raised over $786,389.38 on behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), to help fund the fight to cure cancer; with a goal to collectively raise $1,000,000 by 2025.
